Project Details
The Southern St. George Water Supply Expansion Project (SSGWSEP) is a significant infrastructure initiative aimed at improving the water supply and wastewater systems in the Southern St. George area of Grenada. It is funded by the United Kingdom Caribbean Infrastructure Partnership Fund (UKCIF) and managed by the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB). The Government of Grenada (GOGR) is the beneficiary, and the National Water and Sewerage Authority (NAWASA) is the executing agency.
Objective:
The project aims to improve Water Access and enhance year-round access to potable water for customers served by the Annandale Water Supply System, particularly in Southern St. George.
This will be achieved by:
- Creation of the Southern Water Supply Network, linking the Annandale Water Supply Network with the Concord Water Supply Network.
- Improving data collection through stream flow data.
- Reducing non-revenue water (estimated at 23%).
- Increasing climate resilience of infrastructure and institutional systems.
- Upgrade Sewer Network: Improve the wastewater infrastructure from St. George’s to Southern St. George.
- Capacity Building: Enhance the capabilities of the Government of Grenada and NAWASA through: training on use of technology.
- Incorporation of “gender-sensitive strategies.
Environmental and Social Safeguards:
The project is governed by an Environmental and Social Management Plan (ESMP). The ESMP focuses on mitigating negative impacts on affected communities and the natural environment, while maximizing positive impacts. Stakeholder engagements are critical to inform communities about the project and incorporate their feedback into project delivery. Stakeholder engagements are an integral part of the project implementation strategy, and is crucial to alerting the affected communities on project design and progress. Stakeholder engagements also create opportunities for learning from the community experiences to influence project delivery.
