Contributions to Grenada Climate Goals
Contribution to Grenada Nationally Determined Contributions
The project support’s Grenada’s NDC as well as NAWASA’s goal to become a carbon neural water utility by 2030 with investment in renewable energy. The project undertook a renewable energy potential audit to assess the needs and roadmap for the utility to reach its goal and will be financing a part of the needed renewable energy development, notably, the installation of a 150kWh capacity solar panel installation on its headquarters in St Georges, representing approximately 35% of NAWASA’s annual energy needs.
Reduction of Non-Revenue Water
The reduction of non-revenue water (NRW), that is water that is lost through leakages in the system or theft, is considered another way to reduce the production cost and energy consumption as well as increase water availability. At present, it is estimated that NAWASA loses 26% of its treated water. The reduction strategy developed under the project includes a comprehensive strategic plan focused on digitization: Geographic Information System (GIS) which details network mapping, District Metered Areas (DMAs) monitoring, monitoring of the water quantity in the main network through the existing 60 bulk meters, installation of Insertion Flowmeters at strategic locations which allows calculation of Minimum Night Flow (MNF) , and finally the implementation of a sophisticated Asset Management software to enhance inter alia customer communication, dispatching, documentation, and evaluation of repairs. To coordinate these initiatives efficiently, NAWASA will establish a NRW Unit with dedicated staff. This comprehensive approach to NRW reduction, leveraging digital tools, network restructuring, and improved customer relations aims to sustainably manage water resources, enhance service delivery, and ensure the long-term viability of the water supply infrastructure.
Support for Grenada’s Climate Agenda
Resources have been secured through the Climate-Resilient Water Sector in Grenada (G-CREWS) Project to facilitate the update of the National Climate Change Policy (NCCP) and the National Adaptation Plan (NAP). The update process will be undertaken in close synergies with the NDC implementation plan process and other synergistic projects and initiatives. The project is providing technical assistance to the Ministry of Climate Resilience, the Environment and Renewable Energy in building its climate strategy, planning and coordinating actions among stakeholders, facilitating workshops as well as drafting and updating the document.
The G-CREWS project also supports the Government Climate Agenda by providing support to the Grenada delegation to the COP every year.
